Kids
Cafe
Kids Cafe is a program that provides nutritious meals to
children from low-income families in a safe, secure environment.
Many low-income families find it necessary to cut the size
of their children's meals or skip meals because they cannot
afford to buy food. In Central Florida, 28% of emergency food
recipients each year are children. Kids Cafe gives disadvantaged
young people an opportunity to be healthy, learn, get better
grades and become productive members of our community. Kids
Cafe is making a difference now and will impact the future
for one of our community's most precious resources - its children.
Kids Cafe is a partnership. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central
Florida provides food, funding, and coordinator training for
all Kids Cafe sites with support from corporations and foundations.
Site partners (Boys & Girls Club, housing authority, etc.)
provide a coordinator to prepare and serve meals to the children,
a facility for the Kids Cafe and enrichment activities.
There are currently 11 Kids Cafe sites in Metro Orlando and
Seminole County, serving more than 350 at-risk children an
evening meal at least four nights per week and three of those
sites have been established to serve nutritious snacks to
more than 200 children. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central
Florida plans to open more Kids Cafe meal and snack sites
in the coming year.
