Second
Helpings
Working together with local resorts, hotels, restaurants,
theme parks, convention centers, and convenience stores, the
Second Helpings Program collects and delivers prepared-but-not-served
food six days per week. The food is then delivered to more
than 60 nonprofit agencies who make wholesome, nutritious
meals that help feed populations of children, low-income seniors,
the homeless, mentally disabled and more.
Everything from appetizers, to entrees, to side dishes are
combined for this creative food rescue which transforms roasted
chicken into chicken pot pie and prime rib into beef stew.
Within the program, three refrigerated trucks operating a
total of 192 hours per week providing prepared food donors
with a welcome alternative to dumping their excess food items.
A third truck, operated by the Disney Harvest program and
working with donors inside Disney property, is also administered
by the Second Helpings staff. Second Helpings distributed
1,169,939 pounds of food in 2004-05 the equivalent of
more than 1,462,424 meals.
If you are interested in donating your prepared food to the
Second Helpings Program, pickups can be arranged at your business
or facility. Second Helpings accepts donations from donors
that are regulated food businesses.
