To serve the donated food needs
of agencies serving Brevard County’s hungry citizens, the Second Harvest Food
Bank of Central Florida’s Brevard Branch came into being in July, 2000.
For more than sixteen years, Brevard County’s agencies had accessed donated food from the Brevard Community Food Bank, a program of the Catholic Charities organization. When Catholic Charities made the difficult decision to discontinue their food bank program, an offer was made to the Second Harvest Food Bank to take over this important function for the community.
In its first full year of
operation, the Food Bank’s Brevard Branch has increased the number of pounds
of donated food flowing to 120 agencies by more than 50% over the previous year.
Nearly 700,000 pounds were distributed in fiscal 2000-01.
