Community
Food Drives The
Food Bank collects hundreds of thousands of pounds of food each year through
community food drives sponsored by individuals, corporations, clubs, schools and
associations. Food drives supply nonperishable items that are greatly needed by
partner agencies. For
more information on sponsoring or volunteering at a food drive, please contact: Donna

USDA
Commodities The
U.S. Department of Agriculture purchases food from U.S. farmers and makes it
available to feeding programs through Second Harvest Food Bank. Partner
Savings Program To
provide additional savings to partner agencies, as well as the added convenience
of "one-stop shopping," the Second
Harvest Food Bank purchases rarely donated (but much needed) food products in volume and
makes them available to agencies at a cost that is lower than retail or
wholesale clubs. Second Helpings The Food Bank provides pickup and delivery of food that has been prepared but not served by area restaurants, resorts, theme parks, hotels, convenience stores and convention centers. Prepared food that becomes available is combined by the agencies who receive it to form nutritious meals for hungry people. So the benefits of Second Helpings are twofold: hungry people receive wholesome food, and the food service industry has an alternative to wasting quality products. The Disney Harvest program, which provides pick up and delivery of food from Walt Disney World property, is also administered by Second Helpings. Disaster
Relief Program Second
Harvest Food Bank plays a vital role in responding to emergencies such as floods
and hurricanes throughout the state. For example, the Food Bank staged more than
5 million pounds of food that poured into our state on its way to South Florida
after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The Food Bank stands ready to do in an emergency
what it does every day: get food to people who need it the most.
Kids Cafe The Kids Cafe program provides evening meals at least four times per week to children living in seven of Greater Orlando’s low-income housing neighborhoods. More than 50,000 meals were provided through this important program last year, helping protect many children from the negative effects that hunger can have on behavior, school performance and overall cognitive development. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida provides food,
funding, and coordinator training for Kids Cafe sites with support from
corporations and foundations. Site partners (Boys & Girls Club, housing
authority, etc.) provide a coordinator to prepare and serve meals to the
children, a facility for the Kids Cafe and educational opportunities.
