Central Florida Letter Carriers Collect 376,514 Pounds of Food

Stamp Out Hunger a SuccessOn Saturday, May 9, Central Floridians helped "Stamp Out Hunger" by leaving nonperishable food donations near their mailboxes for collection by their letter carriers. The annual "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers brought in 376,514 pounds of food locally. Thanks to the more than 150 volunteers who sorted the food and the entire commitee for making this year's event a big success! Experience the day with us through our pictures and videos.

Stories of Hope and Courage

Giovana is a diabetic with medical needs, but was let go from her job last year and lost her medical coverage.  Her husband, Sargon, is employed as head of the maintenance department for an apartment complex, but his medical insurance does not cover the entire family.  Thankfully, their two sons are eligible for Medicaid which alleviates some worry. However, Giovana’s costs for diabetic medication are high and her family is often left choosing between groceries or medicine.  Click here to read her story.

Summer Food Service Program Continues

Summer Food Service Program ContinuesThis year, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida will once again be sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program from June 4th through August 21st, 2009 at 10 separate locations in the Greater Orlando area; a total of 56 operating days. Two nutritionally balanced meals will be provided daily (Monday- Friday) to all children during summer vacation when school cafeterias are not accessible. Locate a summer feeding site in your area.

Millions in Food Benefits

Millions in Food BenefitsTens of millions of dollars in approved Government benefits such as SNAP (formerly known as “Food Stamps”) go unclaimed in Central Florida every year. These dollars are left on the table for a wide variety of valid reasons, including obstacles in the application process, lack of awareness, and more. Our Benefits Connection program utilizes a team of field-based specialists with laptop computers who help people access food stamps, Medicaid, Florida Kidcare insurance, TANF benefits and more. Since the program began less than a year ago, our specialists have connected people with more than $2 million of additional benefits. How’s that for economic stimulus?
