Benefits Connection
Starting in early summer 2008, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida launched a brand new initiative, Benefits Connection. It will bring millions of dollars worth of food to people in need in Central Florida. Over $100 million in Food Stamp benefits are not claimed in our area during the course of a year. There are many reasons for this, such as a lack of access to the application, misunderstandings, language barriers, etc.
This program consist of a team of outreach specialists that go to our partner agencies and help people apply for Food Stamps. In addition, there are benefits that this same population may qualify for, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, KidCare (health insurance for children) and Medicaid.
We decided to pursue this program for three key reasons:
- It fits with our mission
- Demand for food is at incredibly high levels
- Millions of dollars worth of benefits will be accessed for food purchase
Since the program began just over a year ago, our specialists have connected people with more than $6 million of additional benefits.
