Grocery Alliance Program

While many supermarkets and retail stores wisely display their freshest and best looking items for marketing appeal, there are many products, perfectly safe for consumption, that typically go to waste. Generally, these are products that are approaching shelf life constraints, slower moving items, or products that have minor packaging damage.  Grocery Alliance is an innovative new program that connects area supermarkets and retail stores with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida to capture these nutritious and otherwise expensive products. 
 
Monday through Friday, the Grocery Alliance team picks up donations from over 300 different retail locations throughout our six-county Central Florida service area. The food is then brought back to our facilities and inspected for quality and safety. Once the products are approved by trained professionals at the Food Bank, it is distributed to more than 500 Second Harvest Food Bank member agencies. During our 2011/2012 fiscal year, this program distributed 15,237,498 pounds of food to our neighbors in need.
 
This new program taps into yet another source of available food in our community, and makes a very real difference in the lives of those who need it.
