Grocery Alliance Program
Grocery Alliance is a new, innovative initiative designed to partner with Central Florida supermarkets and retail stores to donate perishable and nutritious food items to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. While many supermarkets and retail stores wisely display their freshest and best looking items for marketing appeal, there are many products, perfectly safe for consumption, that typically go to waste. These are generally products that are approaching shelf life constraints, slower moving items, or products that have minor packaging damage. The Food Bank would rather see good product rescued by our Grocery Alliance drivers and its fleet of refrigerated trucks, rather than needlessly sent to a local landfill. Monday through Friday the Grocery Alliance team picks up donations from more than 350 different store locations throughout Central Florida. The food is then brought back to our facilities and inspected for quality and safety.
Once products are approved by on-site trained professionals at the Food Bank, the food is distributed to more than 600 Second Harvest Food Bank member agencies who in-turn distribute to clients, who include children, seniors, working poor families, and others. Our clients depend on help from the Food Bank and its member agencies. This new program taps into yet another source of available food in our community, and makes a very real difference in the lives of those who need it.
