Kids Cafe
Kids Cafe is an afterschool program that provides nutritious meals to children from low-income families in a safe, secure environment.
Many low-income families find it necessary to cut the size of their children's meals or skip meals because they cannot afford to buy enough food.
In Central Florida, 28% of emergency food recipients each year are children. Disadvantaged young people benefit from our Kids Cafe program by having quick access to meals at the end of the school day. This promotes overall health, the ability to learn more effectively, earn better grades, and increases chances of success. Kids Cafe is making a difference now and will impact the future of our most precious resource - our children.
Kids Cafe is a partnership. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida provides the food, funding and coordinator training for all Kids Cafe sites with support from corporations, foundations and the State of Florida's Child Care Food Program. Site partners (Community Centers, Boys & Girls Club, Park & Recreation, etc.) provide coordinators to prepare and serve meals to children at their facility. Nutritional education and enrichment activities are also offered.
We currently have 13 Kids Cafe sites in Metro Orlando, Osceola and Seminole County. Six sites serve an evening meal to an average of 400 at-risk children at least four evenings per week. Additionally, 7 sites have been established to serve nutritious snacks to more than 300 children.
